Why isn't this available yet?

Genuine PDF password protection needs a real encryption library running on a server. We'd rather not ship a password field that looks like it works but doesn't actually protect anything.

How can I password-protect a PDF right now?

Most PDF viewers can do this directly — in Adobe Acrobat use Protect > Encrypt, and on macOS use Preview's File > Export, checking Encrypt before saving.

Real password protection isn't available yet

Genuine PDF encryption can't be done safely in the browser with the libraries we use — and we won't ship a "protect" button that quietly does nothing. This needs a server-side encryption tool, which isn't built yet. In the meantime, most PDF readers (Preview, Word, Adobe Acrobat) can add a real password when you export or print to PDF.
